Monroe County never trailed in beating Paintsville 54-44 on Saturday morning in the semifinals of the Touchstone Energy All “A” Classic in Richmond.

The Falcons will face Saint Mary today (Sunday) at 11:30 CST in Eastern Kentucky University’s McBrayer Arena.

Monroe reached the semifinals for the first time in 11 years when they defeated Trimble County 65-33 on Friday.

The Falcons improved to 7-0 in McBrayer with Saturday’s win.

“We hope that streak keeps going,” Monroe County coach Dwayne Murray. “We are going to try to make it 8-0.”

The Falcons kept that ambition alive with a 9-0 run to open the game against the Lady Tigers.

Tara Harlan made a layup 19 seconds into the game, then Laura Anderson nailed a 3-pointer and Kenzie Rich stole the ball and scored.

With 5:33 still to play in the first, Marie Bennett scored off an offensive rebound. The slimmest lead Monroe had after that was five points and that was at 9-4 in the first quarter.

Rich led Monroe with 17 points and six steals, while Bennett added 14 points and Chelsea McCreary finished with 11.

Against Trimble County, McCreary scored 22 points, Rich added 21 and Bennett finished with 13 in Monroe’s 31-point win.

Rich had eight assists, while Bennett and A.J. Wilson each finished with five steals.

“Trimble County didn’t handle the (defensive) pressure very well,” Murray said.
