The Barren County and Glasgow High boys and girls swim team competed Saturday in the Region One Swimming and Diving Championships held in Owensboro. Both teams swam their most competitive races of the season.

The Trojans boys were paced by Jonathan Buck who finished 2nd in the 500 freestyle which earned him a trip to the state meet. His time of 5:05.38 was his best of the season. He also swam a 1:51.93 in the 200 freestyle. That was a life time best for Buck and gained him an at large bid in the state meet. Ryan Metzger also had a good Regional meet. His day one times were good enough to land him the consolation races for day two. In the 200 freestyle Ryan swam a 2:04.88 which earned him 10th place, and in the 500 freestyle Ryan swam a 5:31.97 which also earned him tenth place in that event.

For the Barren girls, Hannah Sparks had a season’s best, 2:45.89 in the 200 I.M. and a 1:22.92 in the 100 breaststroke. She has continued to improve and swam her best times at the end of the season. Kasey Prater also swam her season best time, 2:22.89 in the 200 freestyle and she swam 6:23.32 in the 500 freestyle. Her time in the 500 freestyle made her an alternate for the finals on Saturday.

The other members of the girls team each had excellent times for their events: Emily Kinslow, 34.36 in the 50 freestyle and 1:31.15 in the breaststroke; Chelsea Kerney, 31.02 in the 50 freestyle and 1:31.54 in the 100 breaststroke; and Maria Metzger 1:24.64 in the 100 freestyle and 1:36.72 in the 100 backstroke.

Barren Coach Christy Metzger said the Barren swimmers have all competed hard all season. “Their dedication and hard work paid off in a great performance for the regional competition.”

The Glasgow High Girls' team, led by Barbara Vanderveer, did a great job according to Coach Lora Garrett.

Vanderveer placed fifth overall in the 100 butterfly and 12th in the 100 breaststroke while setting a new school record of 1:17.48. She and Sara Garrett helped to lead the 400 free relay to a 12th place finish. Heather Fields and Micah Elmore completed the relay team.

Heather Fields set season bests in the 200 Free and the 500 free.

Blair Dennison, Micha Elmore, and Jessica Tyree swam well and set at least one personal best in their events.

The Scottie Boys' Team was led by Andrew Whiteside, who finished 13th in the 50 free and 14th in the 100 free. Andrew Flynn and Cameron Branham set new personal bests in both of their events.

Coach Garrett said she was very pleased with all of their efforts. In swimming, the top two places from each region go to the State Meet and then it is the next 14 fastest times. The times from across the state have not been released yet so Garrett isn’t sure if Vanderveer qualified for the state meet.
