GLASGOW – It’s finally here. The heated rivalry of Glasgow versus Barren County returns to the hardwood and rings in the new year this Friday night. Here is a preview for both the boys’ and girls’ games.
Trojans vs. Scotties
Everyone knows how the last matchup between these teams went. Barren County may have been the last seed in the district tournament, but that didn’t stop the Trojans from giving the top-seeded Scotties the scare of a lifetime.
Thanks to a last-second shot from Gavin Withrow, the Trojans took Glasgow into overtime where Nik Sorrell would eventually lead the Scotties to a victory.
Expect another classic between two teams that I consider to be pretty evenly matched.
While Glasgow will have the two best players on the floor in Sorrell and Jaden Franklin, Barren County is a much deeper team that can wear other teams down by the amount of able-bodied players they can throw at teams on defense.
Not to go without mentioning is the Trojans’ duo of Will Bandy and Aden Nyekan. While Bandy will have a titanic matchup with Franklin in the paint, Nyekan will most likely be guarded by Glasgow’s Bowen Haney.
It will be an incredibly vital matchup as Haney can actually match Nyekan’s impressive athleticism. Haney is a tough defender in one-on-one matchups, and I expect him to hold his own against the sophomore.
This game will come down to how well the role players perform for both teams.
Can Jacob Shaw get hot from beyond the arc? Can Robert Kingery be a real mismatch and dominate the boards? Will Landon Frasier handle Barren County’s pressure on defense? And will Tucker Kirkpatrick make his return and give the Scotties’ positive minutes?
I think the advantage here goes to the Scotties since they will be playing on their home court. However, they could easily shoot their selves out of a victory if Sorrell and Haney are not hitting their long-range jump shots.
Prediction: Scotties 59, Trojans 57
Lady Scotties vs. Trojanettes
Oh boy. If you thought the boys were evenly matched, you should just take a closer look at these two teams.
Outside of Bowling Green, these are the two best girls’ teams in the region featuring three of the best players in the area: the Trojanettes’ Elizabeth Bertram, and Glasgow’s duo of Ashanti Gore and Anzley Adwell.
In several ways, these teams mirror their male counterparts. Like the Scotties, the Lady Scotties are powered by two standout individuals (Gore, Adwell), and the Trojanettes are a very deep team like the Trojans are.
This is a very interesting matchup. Glasgow will have a huge advantage in the paint with Gore. I expect her to put a very impressive stat line on Friday night.
However, I really like Barren County’s Katie Murphy here. Even as an eighth-grader, Murphy is one of the best defensive guards in the region. With the Lady Scotties not having a true ball-handler, expect several steals from Murphy.
This contest will hinge on how well the duo of Bertram and Eve Jackson hit their shots from behind the arc. They are two of the best long-range shooters in the region and both are red-hot right now.
While this will be a close game that will decided by who hits more jump shots, I’m going with the Trojanettes to have the advantage. At this point in the season, I trust their offense more. I expect coach Justin Stinson’s team to be just as good offensively by the end of the season.
Prediction: Barren County 53, Glasgow 49
