It did not take a miracle, but it took an outstanding effort for the Caverna Colonels to advance in the Boys 18th District Tournament on Monday.

The Colonels fell behind the Larue County Hawks by as many as 20 points in the first half before rallying in the second half for a 58-51 win.

The Colonels will face the winner of tonight’s contest between Hart County and Green County. The game will tip at 6:30 p.m. at Caverna High.

Caverna entered the tournament on its home court as the top seed in the district tournament and it had beaten Larue — and former Colonels head coach Paul Childress — twice during the regular season.

None of that meant a thing for the first 16 minutes of the game.

The Hawks led 15-6 at the end of the first quarter and they opened the second period on a run that eventually led to a 20-point lead.

The Colonels’ rally began before the end of the first half as they were able to get within 10 points at the break — 29-19.

Caverna outscored Larue County 22-14 in the third quarter and trailed 43-41 after three.

Carrington Maxey, who led all scorers with 19 points, scored 11 in the third period for the Colonels.

Caverna completed the comeback with a 17-8 edge in the final period.

Chad Briggs scored 14 for the Colonels, while Curtis Adams added 10.

Jesse Bennington led Larue with 18 points.
