CAVE CITY — Girls from around the community collectively performed dance moves as they stood on long, blue mats that were stretched across the gym floor last week at Caverna Elementary School.
They followed along with instructors who were performing cheers during Caverna’s Youth Cheer and Dance Camp. The two-day camp was divided into a day of cheer and a day of dance.
On Thursday, the girls learned about motions, cheers, jumps, stunts and tumbling, said Desire Clark, a camp instructor.
Friday’s instruction focused on dance, said Jalen Woodard, Caverna’s cheer and dance coach.
“So we’re doing like ballet, modern and hip-hop,” Woodard said, adding that it is very rewarding to see “everybody here happy, smiling, loving cheer — we get the kids out of the house for two days.”
Clark, who cheered for and graduated from Glasgow High School, said she enjoys giving back to the local community.
“I just like coming out, supporting my community and teaching other girls how to cheer,” she said. “Just enjoy being with the kids … teaching the girls of what I did all four years of high school, and just seeing the girls try and smile and just enjoy cheer.”
Alanis Coomer, another camp instructor, said her favorite part about this camp has been “seeing the girls getting out and having fun.”
“A lot of this camp is about giving these girls some confidence,” she said. “Letting them come out and just be themselves and express themselves.”
