Drew Rhodes drops an assist to teammate Mark Webb(1) in the first half of Caverna's game against Fort Knox on Monday.

HORSE CAVE — The skid ended Monday night for Caverna.

The Colonels had dropped 26 straight games since beating Fort Knox over a year ago. Caverna hosted the Eagles for its season-opener and held off a late Fort Knox charge to win 67-59.

Dee Richardson and Drew Rhodes dominated the game offensively in the first half for the Colonels.

Richardson scored six of the first eight points for the Colonels and would have 14 at halftime. He knocked down a trey to start the second quarter that put Caverna ahead of the Eagles 18-16.

Rhodes hit a pair of free throws a few minutes later to put Caverna back on top and then knocked down a runner in the lane to extend the advantage to 28-25.

Rhodes drilled two more free throws just before the half to give Caverna a 34-27 lead at the break.

Rhodes stroked a 3-pointer early in the second half that was followed by a jumper from Zyier Yates to push the lead to 41-31.

Fort Knox quickly responded with a 5-0 run to cut the lead in half, but Kenyan Wood knocked down a timely trey to stop the run.

The Eagles’ momentum would only be subsided for a moment, as Fort Knox stormed back to tie the score late in the third quarter. Wood’s second 3-pointer of the quarter, this one just before the buzzer, gave Caverna a 48-45 lead headed into the fourth quarter.

Just a freshman, Wood scored the first bucket of the fourth quarter. He sliced through the Fort Knox defense to bank home a layup.

Rhodes made a difficult layup in transition on the next possession to put Caverna up 52-47.

But with 5:41 left in the game, Fort Knox would again tie the score, and the Colonels would again answer.

After coming up with a steal, Yates tossed the ball ahead to Wood for a deuce that put Caverna on top 59-56.

Following another turnover, Richardson drew a foul and hit two free throws to extend the lead to five with 2:26 to play.

Rhodes’ 18th point of the night came on a foul shot with 1:36 to play that made the score 62-59.

Richardson then sealed the win by knocking down two free throws with less than a minute to play.

Rhodes led Caverna with 19 points while Richardson added 18.
