EDMONTON - Two big runs gave Metcalfe County all the offense it would need against Russell County.

The Hornets used five first quarter three-pointers to jump out to a 27-4 game-opening run and turned pressure defense into easy baskets in a 22-0 third quarter spark in a 77-41 demolishing of the Lakers on Thursday night.

In the key quarters of the game, the first and the third, the Hornets outscored the Lakers by a combined score of 56-10.

“We really played well in the first and third quarters,” Metcalfe coach Tim McMurtrey said. “We did not play real well the second quarter.

“Russell County just had a real bad shooting night and we capitalized on that. And we shot the ball real well.”

Trey Shirley led Metcalfe with 23 points while 13 Hornets scored in the game. Metcalfe shot 45 percent from the field on the game, including 6-of-12 from three point land. Russell shot just 27 percent on the night.

The Hornets got three straight treys, two from Shirley and one from Jeffrey White, in the first 1:48 of the game to open with a 9-0 advantage.

After Russell’s first basket came with 4:32 left in the opening frame, Metcalfe rattled off an 11-0 run, getting five points from Shirley and four from Winston Harbison to lead 20-2.

The Hornets ended the quarter on a 7-4 run, getting a three-pointer from Eric Ennis and baskets from Shirley and Will Warf to lead 27-6.

“We were just hot,” McMurtrey said. “We hadn’t played at home in a while. We were able to put the ball in the basket.”

As hot as the Hornets were in the opening frame, they were just as cold in the second quarter. Metcalfe got just a pair of field goals and two free throws in the quarter as Russell cut the lead to 13 at the break.

“All those shots went in early, then we didn’t work quite as hard offensively,” said McMurtrey. “Russell County outplayed us in the second quarter.”

But the run to open the second half would seal the victory for Metcalfe.

The Hornets started the third quarter on a 22-0 run, holding the Lakers scoreless through the frame’s first 6:17, as they went on to grab a 62-24 lead. Metcalfe outscored Russell 29-4 in the quarter while getting 14 of those points via the fast break.

“We did a good job defensively,” McMurtrey said. “We did a good job of getting in the passing lanes and were just able to get the ball in the hole. It was just one of those nights where everything good for us, and didn’t go so good for Russell County.”

Harbison added 10 points and White had eight. Metcalfe totaled 13 assists, seven steals and six blocked shots, while outrebounding Russell 43-35.

Metcalfe improved to 11-1 with the win while moving to 3-0 in district play. Russell fell to 5-6 overall and 1-1 in district competition.

“We’re 3-0 in district play,” said McMurtrey. “Those are the most important games we have right now, and we’ve got two district games next week, on Tuesday and Friday.”

The Hornets return to action Tuesday at Cumberland County.
