The Barren County Elite 10U softball team recently won the Babe Ruth League Ohio Valley Regional Tournament in Louisville.

The tournament included teams from Kentucky, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

On its road to victory, Barren County defeated the state champions from West Virginia, Indiana and Kentucky.

The Barren County Elite 10U softball team — consisting of MC Warren, Adley Cunningham, Khloe Westmoreland, Josey Moore, Norah Shirley, Gracie Myatt, Kyra Moore, Lily Elmore, Jakylie Green, Kaitlynn Ray and Audrey Jones — is coached by Jonathan Myatt, who is assisted by Ben Ray, Trent Cunningham and Vanessa Moore.

“It’s a super accomplishment for them,” Coach Jonathan Myatt said. “What they did is something that’s never been accomplished by a Barren County team.”

After dropping two out of three games to begin the region tournament, Barren County won six straight contests — defeating Eastside twice (23-7, 9-6) in the final two games — for the regional title. The team’s second loss occurred after double elimination began.

“We knew from that point that if we lost, we were out of the tournament,” Myatt said. “So we buckled down and played hard.

“Girls came out swinging the bats well. Defense was there, so I couldn’t be more pleased with the girls.”

Myatt described this year’s team as a “super group of girls.”

“They play hard,” he said. “We’ve had our ups and downs, but when push comes to shove, they always play hard and come together as a team.

“You couldn’t ask for a better group. They play well together. They know each other. They know what to expect from each other. When one’s down, the other picks them up. I couldn’t be more pleased.”

Myatt said the team has been practicing twice a week and has played a lot of weekend games to prepare them for this regional tournament.

Fern Creek had beaten Barren County at the state tournament, and they faced off again at region.

“Getting the opportunity to play them again and beating them 11-0, it just shows how well our girls play,” Myatt said. “Beating three state champions — West Virginia, Indiana, Kentucky state champions — to win that region is huge.”

Myatt said he wanted to thank the parents for all of their support they give the team.

“That was huge,” he said. “Because it takes a lot of time.”
