GLASGOW — The names of the two people who died from injuries sustained in a four-vehicle crash that occurred around 10:48 a.m. Friday on Happy Valley Road between Flint Knob and Pace Quarry roads have been released by the Kentucky State Police.
Richard S. Gray, 57, of Lansing, Michigan, who was driving a 2019 Freightliner bobtailed semi-truck and traveling westbound on Happy Valley Road, was pronounced dead at the scene by personnel with the Barren County Coroner's Office, said a Kentucky State Police press release.
William D. Johnson, 47, of Louisville, who was driving a 2004 Ford Econoline van, was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville and hours later, at approximately 4:54 p.m., succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash, the press release said.
The crash occurred when Gray crossed over the centerline of Happy Valley Road and into the path of oncoming traffic. Gray's bobtailed semi-truck struck the rear trailer of a 2015 Freightliner tractor-trailer traveling eastbound and being driven by Mihail Strungav, 33, of New Orleans, the press release said.
Gray's bobtailed semi-truck continued its path of travel and struck Johnson's van. A 2018 Nissan pickup truck traveling behind Johnson's van and driven by Seth T. Arterburn, 26, of Cave City, was also struck by Gray's bobtailed semi-truck before all vehicles came to a final rest, the press release said.
Strungav did not report any injuries while on the scene of the crash. A passenger in Johnson's van, Latoya P. Britton, 44, along with Arterburn, were treated and released from T.J. Samson Community Hospital, the press release said.
The reason Gray crossed the centerline of the road is not known, state police said.
An investigation continues and is being led by Trooper Daniel Priddy, who was assisted at the crash scene by Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, the Barren-Metcalfe County Emergency Medical Service and other state police personnel, the press release said.
