GLASGOW — David A. Pons, the man accused in the homicide case of Christopher Walker, was scheduled to be arraigned on Monday afternoon in Barren District Court.
Pons, 48, who is being held at the Barren County Detention Center in lieu of a $750,000 cash bond, appeared before Barren District Court Judge Gabe Pendleton via video feed from the jail. He did not enter a plea during the arraignment. Instead, he was appointed a public defender, who requested a preliminary hearing in the case. The preliminary hearing is set for May 6.
No change was made in Pons' bond.
Pons faces one count of murder. He is accused of shooting and killing Walker, 32, on Friday at a residence in the 1700 block of Park City-Glasgow Road.
According to Pons' arrest citation from the Barren County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to the residence in reference to a person who was suicidal and who had posted on Facebook that he had killed someone.
When deputies arrived at the residence, they found two people in a vehicle. One was a woman, later identified as Melinda Pons, 40, David Pons' wife, who was unconscious. The other person was Walker, who appeared to have died from gunshot wounds, the arrest citation said. Walker lived with David and Melinda Pons, according to the citation.
Melinda Pons was placed in a police patrol car. The person who had made the Facebook post was believed to be inside the residence. While waiting for other deputies to arrive on the scene, David Pons exited the residence and was taken into custody, the arrest citation said.
Melinda Pons told deputies that her husband told her Walker had threatened her, but that she had never heard Walker threaten anyone, the arrest citation said.
When David Pons was taken into custody, he told sheriff's deputies that he had shot Walker in self-defense. A juvenile girl at the scene told deputies that all of the adults were drinking when an argument broke out between David Pons and Walker. The juvenile girl was told to go to her room after the two men began to argue. She told deputies that after the shots were fired, she saw blood on Walker's chest and that he could not talk, the arrest citation said.
Deputies found blood in the front yard of the residence. They also found a shell casing between the blood and the residence, the arrest citation said.
According to the investigation, Melinda Pons and Walker were leaving the residence when the shots were fired, the arrest citation said.
David Pons was lodged in the Barren County Detention Center.
Melinda Pons was also arrested and charged with alcohol intoxication in a public place. She also was lodged in the Barren County Detention Center, but has since been released, according to the jail website.
