Not many people have heard about President Bush’s plan to grant each taxpayer a rebate up to $800 this year, but those who have heard about it had quite a bit to say about it Monday.

Arafadh Fuard, who works at Zack’s Express at the corner of Lexington Drive and N. Jackson Highway, thinks the president’s proposal is a good one and said he is planning to save his tax rebate rather than spend it. He also thinks taxpayers should get that kind of break every year.

Ronnie McCandless, owner of Country Express on N. Jackson Highway, said, “I’m sure everybody would like that.”

President Bush was scheduled to lay out the principles of his proposal Friday, but was not expected to provide any details, according to a Washington Post article.

The article said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) expects Congress to have a package ready for action by Jan. 28, which is when President Bush is set to give his State of the Union address.

The proposal is designed to stimulate the economy and bring the U.S. out of its recession.

Steve Bulle, who was having lunch at Country Express on Monday, said, “They’ll just take it back next year.”

As to what he would do with the money should he receive it, he said, “I owe so much it wouldn’t matter.”

Bulle believes the proposed tax rebate to be a ploy to gain political party support.

“They are just trying to get you to vote for the Republicans is what they are trying to do,” he said.

Bertha Saltsman, a clerk at Food Mart on Columbia Avenue, also thinks the proposal is a good idea.

“I guess all these hard-working people could use it,” she said.

After thinking for a moment, Saltsman said she would use her tax rebate to buy new eyeglasses and other necessities.

“I just wouldn’t go out and shop,” she said.

Her co-worker, Tammy Mosby, purchased two new vehicles last year and plans to apply the money to her balance.

Betty Tarry, who also works at the Food Mart on Columbia Avenue, says she would use it wisely.

“It sure wouldn’t be wasted on the lottery,” she said. “It would be used to pay a bill or something. It wouldn’t be wasted that’s for sure.”
