A search for a new principal for Metcalfe County High School is under way.

David Nole, who had served as principal of MCHS for four years, voluntarily stepped down from the position in December to take a position as districtwide math coach.

“It’s something I’m excited about,” he said.

Nole will be in charge of improving student math scores in kindergarten through the 12th grade, and said he plans to develop a guide for all students to ensure they have the mathematic skills they need at each grade level. He will be looking at new core content standards, as well as the ACT exam to determine what skills need to be mastered.

“It’s something we need and I’m looking forward to getting that started,” he said.

Nole discussed becoming the district’s new math coach with Superintendent Pat Hurt in December before district officials learned the high school had appeared on an “unofficial list of persistently low achieving” schools and would be undergoing an academic audit.

Some believe the purpose of an academic audit is to replace school leadership.

“That’s not the primary purpose,” said Lisa Gross, a spokesperson for the Kentucky Department of Education. “Under House Bill 176, the audits are to determine: the functioning of the school and the school council, a determination of the school council and principal’s ability to lead, the intervention in the persistently low-achieving school, the interaction and relationship between the superintendent and central office personnel and the council.

“The audit will include recommendations on whether the school council can retain its authority, if it should be replaced and if the current principal should remain at the school.”

Hurt said Nole requested the transfer as of July 1.

“He gave me personal and family reasons,” she said. “The principal’s job is very demanding with extra duties and responsibilities. Our district needs a math focus and he’s ready to take it on.”

Dorothy McCubbin has been appointed to serve as interim principal of MCHS until someone can be hired to fill the seat permanently.

“I consider it an honor to be asked,” she said. “I see a lot of positive changes from when I was here four years ago. I’m looking forward to the challenge.”

McCubbin has also served as interim principal at Barren County Middle School, Hiseville Elementary and Red Cross Elementary for the Barren County School System, and once before for Metcalfe County High School. She served as interim principal for Metcalfe County High School, along with Larry Locke, following the transfer of Chris Huffman to the district’s central office to serve as director of pupil personnel. Huffman served six years as principal at MCHS.

Hurt is scheduled to meet with the MCHS site-based decision-making council to begin the search for a new principal.
