Joining others from the Barren County area in helping Hurricane Katrina victims are Ted Messenger, Matt Rowland, Brice Leech and student firefighters with Mammoth Cave National Park.

“They are currently assigned to Katrina Support based at the Louis Armstrong International Airport,” said Vickie Carson, public information officer for Mammoth Cave.

The crew from Mammoth Cave has been working the night shift assisting with medical evacuations, and switched to the day shift on Sept. 8.

According to Rich Caldwell, a park ranger at Mammoth Cave, the crew will receive military commendations for their work.

“They will be there for the full 14-day assignment, the last two days participating in critical incident stress debriefing,” Caldwell said.

Once the debriefing is complete, the crew will be returning home, he said.
