Black Stone Cherry, a local rock band, is about to release its first CD.

The self-titled album, which is available on Road Runner Records, will debut July 18.

“We’re so proud and fortunate to have a national release,” said John Fred Young, drummer. “We’re excited to death.”

Their single, “Lonely Train,” was recently ranked No. 1 by Music Choice and No. 16 by Rock Radio. Last week it was the most downloaded song at Wal-Mart.

The song is also now available as a cell phone ringtone.

As for a second release off the album, Young said he’s not sure which one it will be.

“We’re still pushing ‘Lonely Train,’” he said. “The air play we’re receiving off it keeps it climbing.”

The band filmed a video for the single in an old bank building in New Orleans.

Fans can view the video by visiting the band’s record label, Road Runner Records’ Web site at

The group is currently on tour and will be opening for Buck Cherry in Cleveland, Ohio, on the day the album is released.

The band played a backyard barbecue for a radio station in Lansing, Mich., and opened for Buck Cherry in Flint, Mich., last week. It is also scheduled to open for Staind on Aug. 8 in Green Bay, Wisc., and will later tour with Zakk Wylde’s band, Black Label Society.

The band is scheduled to play at the A1A Entertainment Complex in Lexington on July 26 and O’Malley’s Corner in Louisville on July 27.
