In the book of Job, chapter 22 verse 21, we find these words, “Now acquaint yourself with Him, and be at peace; Thereby good will come to you.”

The advice of this text is good. It cannot be improved. The man who spoke these words was not acquainted with God. His purpose was to make Job believe that all suffering was caused by sin. His argument would be that religion pays in dollars and cents. Many have embraced it from this standpoint. But, for now let’s forget the man who gave these words and meditate on the truth he spoke.

Acquaintance with God is possible. This verse does not attempt to prove the existence of God. That is a fact to be declared. The real question is not the existence of God, but how man can contact Him. God created man with a spiritual capacity, a need for acquaintance with Him. He has spoken to us through Christ. God has given a revelation of Himself in the Bible.

Acquaintance with God is shown in that men like Enoch and Job had fellowship with God. One of the most exciting verses of scripture to me is about this man Enoch. In Genesis 5:24 we read these words, “And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took Him.” I never get tired of reading that. In the middle of all these “begats” the writer stops long enough to tell us that Enoch walked with God and was no more. God just took him. Talk about acquaintance.

It also makes me wonder about the relationship all of these other “begats” had with God. The only thing we know about this man is that he walked with God and God translated him. What a life of relationship.

Acquaintance with God is profitable. Acquaintance with a powerful and influential man is always profitable. The world tells that it is not what you know, but whom you know.

Paul said in 2 Timothy 1:12, “For this reason I also suffer these things; nevertheless I am not ashamed, for I know who I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that Day.”

Acquaintance with God brings peace to our hearts. What mighty peace God is able to give! The peace that God gives is deep and satisfying peace. The peace that God gives is undisturbed condition of the mind and the soul in the midst of perplexities and dangers. The peace that God gives is the peace of contentment.

Acquaintance with God brings us into His favor as stated in Job 22:22b, “Thereby good will come to you.”

Acquaintance with God is practical. It is more than just a theory when God is put to the test. It is more than just a theory when we believe His Word and trust His promises. In John 5:24 Jesus Himself says it all. “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.” It is possible that you can drop a name or two of some influential person you know. You may have pictures to verify your status. But, none of that means anything. What matters is whether or not you have an acquaintance with God.

The Creator desires a relationship with you. Not just a handshake and smile, but a relationship that goes through the good times and the bad. Most of us never meet or know anyone of influence.

A missionary was returning home from many years of service in Africa. Also on the ship was President Theodore Roosevelt returning form a Safari hunting trip. When they docked, there was a large crowd with a band and great fanfare to welcome the President home. There was no one to welcome the old missionary and he cried out to God asking why, after all the years of service to His kingdom, there was no great welcome for him. The Lord spoke quietly to his heart and said “Son, you’re not home yet.” Making the acquaintance means making it home.
