Musical performances, the afternoon kids' games -- the greased-watermelon carry, seed spitting contest and, of course, watermelon eating contest -- and carnival rides are but a sampling of the fun and enjoyment that could be had at the 2018 Monroe County Watermelon Festival in Tompkinsville on Saturday. Other contests with the theme of the day were for watermelon decorating and the largest watermelon.

The event got off to a running start with 5k/fun run and a parade later in the morning. Vendors sold crafts, clothes and other wares. Rolleyhole marbles and horseshoe tournaments, an art show, a quilt show and cruise-in were also part of the offerings, plus a special ceremony to show appreciation for local law enforcement officials took place.
