Ramblin' Reck: Marshall’s loss in Final Four wraps up Valley prep football

The high school football season has ended in the Valley.
Marshall was the last team still playing games last week and the Lions closed a banner season by losing to Maroa -Forsyth 31-14 in the semifinals of the Illinois Class 2A playoffs

  • Amey Takes Aim: Mashall’s pride was roaring during unforgettable run
Only 29 seconds remained Saturday afternoon when Marshall’s Lions finally realized their 11-game high school football winning streak had come to an end. Taylor Duncan’s fourth-down pass had fallen incomplete, visiting Maroa-Forsyth had the ball — and a 17-point lead — and the Lions’ offensive unit trooped dejectedly off the field.

  • Amey Takes Aim: Envelope please … it’s the annual Amey Awards for Valley football
It’s been a high school football season Mike Stiener would have loved. Probably the toughest kid in my class at Center Grade School and Lowell High School — or at least he would have tried to convince you he was the toughest — Mike was our team MVP in football our senior year as a 130-pound guard and middle linebacker (I was in the running for LVP, but that’s another story), flew supplies into the Middle East during the first Gulf War, and is currently the pastor of a little church in the hills of northern California.

  • Ramblin' Reck: Marshall football ready for its first Final Four since ’79
The high school football season has ended for all but one team in the Valley.

  • Amey Takes Aim: Pomeroys’ success has this columinst smiling
Let me be the first to say that I should have been on this bandwagon a lot sooner; 15 years ago or so, in fact. Considering what I do for a living, I could have been a lot more vocal and enthusiastic when the decision was made back then to offer athletic scholarships at St. Mary-of-the-Woods. I wasn’t opposed to the idea, and calling me skeptical would have even been a little too strong. But I guess I just kind of shrugged and said, “Oh well.” So long as it didn’t affect Sunday brunch, I was OK with it.

  • Ramblin' Reck: Prep, college basketball starts to take over as football season comes to an end
It’s another big week for sports in the area. High school and college basketball teams begin the season while Indiana State plays its final football game of the season. And three high school football teams still are alive in the postseason in Indiana and Illinois.

  • From the Press Box: ISU can’t get out of field position jail
All right all of you armchair coaches, you Vince Lombardis of the XBox, you dominators of Madden football, time to stand up and be counted.

  • Kegler's Korner: Scamihorn still a force around lanes
Jay Scamihorn has been a frequent high scorer in senior — that’s older folks! — leagues in recent years, frequently recognized for high game or high series (usually both).

  • Rub of the Green: Course architect Pete Dye has had lasting impression on game
It would seem that the more you learn about Pete Dye, the golf course architect, the more there is to admire about the man. It was decades ago when Dye determined that the insurance business was not for him, and he decided to begin designing golf courses. Even Pete, himself, in all likelihood, couldn’t have known the impact he was going to make on the golf world.

  • COLTS BULLETIN: Jackson on injured reserve for remainder of season
The injury bug continues to haunt the Indianapolis Colts. Team officials confirmed today that cornerback Marlin Jackson has been placed on injured reserve for the remainder of the season.
