George W. Roehm Jr.
George W. Roehm Jr., 89, lifetime Terre Haute resident, passed away peacefully on Oct. 27, 2009, at Cobblestone Crossings Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born on April 18, 1920, to George W. Roehm Sr. and Emma (Clemenz) Roehm. As a young person, he attended St. Margaret Mary elementary school and graduated from the former Honey Creek High School. He was employed by Roehm Brothers Construction, before beginning his career at Wabash Fiber Box Company, where he was a maintenance mechanic specializing in servicing Clark Industrial Equipment. His 48 years of employment with Wabash Fiber was interrupted by military service during World War II. He was a member of the 489th Air Service Group and was a participant in the Normandy Invasion. He was awarded the EAME Theater Ribbon with three Bronze Stars. One of his favorite pastimes was gardening and sharing his produce. In 2000, he received special recognition from the Indiana Blood Center for outstanding community service on having made 77 donations of blood.
He was a loving husband to his wife of 59 years, Maurine (Morris) Roehm, who preceded him in death, on Oct. 28, 2004, and was a loving father. He was known for the generosity of his time and talents to help others. He was a life member of the Lawton-Byrum Veteran of Foreign Wars 972.
He is survived by his son George W. Roehm III; four daughters, Helen Boyer and husband David, Charlotte Roehm Pickens, Susan Shaw and husband Michael, and Margaret McCain and husband John. His grandchildren are Dr. Michael Boyer and his wife Dr. Soheila Boyer, J.D. Boyer and his wife Amy, Christie Pyatt and her husband Rob, Jennifer Sears and her husband Justin, Michael Shaw and his wife Lauren, William McCain, and Lizzy McCain. His great-grandchildren are Alyssa Sears, Mickey Floyd, Abby Boyer, Aliyeh Boyer, Rory Pyatt, Asher Pyatt, Ashtyn Shaw and Avah Shaw. He also is survived by two sisters-in-law, Maryanne Roehm and Patricia Morris; and a brother-in-law, Frank Pearce. There are also numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters, Helen Roehm, Virginia Hauer, Julia Eaton, Esther Garvin, Ethel McCammon, Ruth Starkey, Lucille Lidster, Eugene ‘Bud’ Roehm, Paul Roehm and Joseph Roehm.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, at DeBaun Springhill Chapel, 85 E. Springhill Drive, with the Rev. Dana Newhouse officiating. Calling hours will be on Saturday from noon until services. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park with VFW 972 conducting graveside military honors. For those who desire, the family has requested memorial contributions be made to Catholic Charities of Terre Haute.
