Metro Roundup: Hanover hangs on to beat Rose men’s soccer in HCAC tournament

Tribune-Star staff report

Hanover withstood a second half charge that featured host team Rose-Hulman outshooting the visitors 18-3 in the match, but the Panthers held on for a 1-0 victory in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s soccer semifinal game on Tuesday.

Jake Stawick provided the lone goal of the match on a scramble in front of the Engineer goal in the 23rd minute of the opening half. Hanover’s Miles Kroner was credited with the assist.

Rose dominated possession and field position in the second half, but a strong defensive effort lifted Hanover to the league title round.

Michael Hansford recorded seven saves for the winners, including a diving save on an in the box blast by senior Rhys Evans in the last five minutes of regulation.

Sophomore Clint Vatterrodt led the Engineer offense with five shots, with junior Corbin Clow adding four shots. Evans provided three, and the Engineers also earned a 10-2 advantage on corner kicks in the match.

Rose-Hulman earned its second consecutive HCAC regular season championship with an unblemished 8-0 mark in league play. The Engineers capped the season with a 12-6-1 mark overall.

Hanover improved to 7-10 and advances to Saturday’s league title tilt at Transylvania.

Cross Country

• ISU men drop to No. 8 — Despite winning the 2009 Missouri Valley Conference championship, the Indiana State men’s team dropped a notch in the Great Lakes Region in this week’s United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association poll.

The Sycamores dropped from seventh to eighth in the poll despite edging Southern Illinois (ranked sixth in the Midwest Region) by a single point to claim Indiana State’s sixth MVC championship.

n Nine ISU runners honored — Indiana State had five men and four women selections on the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete teams.

Men included Scott Keeney (3.966 GPA), Jeremiah Vaughan (3.643), Craig Padgett (3.500), Michael Disher (3.417) and Eric Schulz (3.228).

Women were Kacie Klem (3.983), Allison Moore (3.900), Julia Costello of Clinton (3.750) and Kayla Alexander of Terre Haute (3.612).

This was the third straight year of selection for Disher and Alexander.

Football

• ISU foursome honored — Four former Indiana State football players were named to the Missouri Valley Football Conference’s Silver Anniversary Team, the league office has announced. Honorees included David Wright (1992-95), Dan Brandenburg (1992-95), Shannon Jackson (1996-99) and Kyle Mitchell (2002-05).

Wright was a four-time all-conference running back who went on to earn second-team All-America honors in 1992. No. 4 all-time with 5,341 all-purpose yards, he garnered first-team all-league status in 1992, 1993 and 1995, and was a second-team selection in 1994.

Brandenburg was a three-time all-conference defensive lineman (1993-95) and a two-time All-American in 1994 and 1995. He ranks fourth all-time with 32 sacks. He later played professionally with the Buffalo Bills.

Jackson, who is 10th all-time in sacks (24), was named to four all-conference teams as a defensive lineman. He was a first-team awardee in 1997 and 1999, as well as second-team in 1998 and an honorable mention pick in 1996. Jackson was also named a third-team All-American in his sophomore and senior years.

Mitchell is the most recent ISU defensive lineman on the list, having earned a spot on the All-MVFC squads all four years of his career. After an honorable mention accolade as a freshman, Mitchell was a first-teamer from 2003 to 2005 and tallied 25.5 sacks, good for eighth all-time.
