Metro Roundup: Drake ends ISU women’s soccer season with 3-1 win
Tribune-Star staff report
Des Moines —
Indiana State’s women’s soccer team saw its season come to end Sunday afternoon when the Sycamores lost 3-1 to host Drake in the quarterfinals of the Missouri Valley Conference tournament.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the 15th minute when Elizabeth Woerle scored her eighth goal of the season on a shot from the top of the penalty box.
In a span of just under five minutes, Indiana State was narrowly denied a pair of goals, both shots by freshman Casey Allbright. In the 27th minute Allbright received a pass on the run from senior Katlin Owens and knocked the ball past the Drake goalkeeper at the top of the penalty box, but a Bulldog defender was able to get to the ball just before it crossed the goal line. In the 31st minute, Owens once again found Allbright open on the left wing, but Allbright was deemed offsides by the side official before her shot reached the back of the net.
Over the first 45 minutes of the game, Indiana State and Drake both took four shots each, with the Sycamores holding a 2-1 shot on goal advantage.
The third time was the charm for Allbright and the Sycamores, who tied the game just minutes into the second half. Sophomore Morgan Wendlandt sent a free kick into the Drake penalty box and, after a short period of both teams attempting to control the ball, the ball fell at Allbright’s foot. Allbright cracked a shot that the Drake goalkeeper saved, but the rebound came out again to Allbright, who beat the Bulldog goalie to the right post for her third goal this season.
Just under two minutes later, Indiana State was whistled for a foul in the penalty box, setting up a penalty kick for the Bulldogs. Woerle stepped up to take the shot, but was denied at the lower left post by Sycamore goalkeeper Taylor Nelson.
Drake scored the game winner with 2:12 remaining in the game off the head of Bailey Dorrington. As Indiana State pushed forward looking for a tying goal, Laura Moklestad broke away for Drake’s final goal 75 seconds later.
For the game, Indiana State took 10 shots with five on goal. Nelson played all 90 minutes in goal for the Sycamores, making four saves.
With the loss, Indiana State ended its season at 5-10-3. Drake advanced to the MVC semifinals to face top-seeded Illinois State. Third-seeded Creighton beat sixth-seeded Evansville, and will face second-seeded Missouri State
on Friday.
