Vikings come out firing in season-opening victory

Size doesn’t really matter as long as the basketball goes through the hoop. And boy can the small-in-stature West Vigo boys basketball team tickle the twines, if their first game is any indication. West Vigo shot the ball at a sizzling 58.8 percent clip, exploding for 29 first quarter points, and breezed to an easy 80-58 victory over visiting North Vermillion in the season openers for both teams at the Green Dome on Wednesday.

Amey Takes Aim: Lowell and behold, guess which school is in 4A’s title game

I’m not going to get to go, but then again why should I have to? It’s a regular occurrence by now. Yes, Lowell is in Saturday’s Class 4A high school football championship game — again. It’s the third time in five seasons for the Red Devils, who may have to worry about coach Kirk Kennedy getting hired away by Notre Dame.

North boys ride defense to win

Imposing defensive will and owning the rebounding advantage is nice no matter where the calendar happens to be. That Terre Haute North boys basketball team was able to claim both as keys in its season-opening 53-38 victory over Evansville Central on Wednesday makes the Patriots feel good about where they stand for the rest of the season.

South Vermillion boys basketball’s strength too much for Clay City

Andy Walsh had been busy quarterbacking the South Vermillion football team to a record-setting season, and Wednesday night he led the Wildcats’ basketball team to a 61-46 season-opening victory over the visiting Clay City Eels. Walsh scored 24 points and grabbed six rebounds.

PREP PREVIEW: Patriots looking ahead to improved campaign this season

Selective amnesia. That’s part of the process this season as Terre Haute North expects to rebound from an 8-15 campaign a year ago.

A 19-6 season last winter with a bunch of little kids, almost all of whom weren’t exclusively — or even primarily — basketball players made West Vigo and coach Joe Boehler one of the feel-good stories of the season.

Late Saturday: South girls hold off Northview 55-46

The Terre Haute South Braves left Brazil with two victories on Saturday night. En route to holding off the Northview Knights for a 55-46 win, the Braves learned how to play against a specialty defense. Northview used a box-and-one defense to rally from a 15-point deficit and get within three points before South hit critical free throws to move to 5-0 on the young season.

Only 29 seconds remained Saturday afternoon when Marshall’s Lions finally realized their 11-game high school football winning streak had come to an end. Taylor Duncan’s fourth-down pass had fallen incomplete, visiting Maroa-Forsyth had the ball — and a 17-point lead — and the Lions’ offensive unit trooped dejectedly off the field.
