ISU’s 2010 Hall of Fame class ready for induction

Five Indiana State graduates will be honored in February when they are inducted into the Indiana State Athletics Hall of Fame.

Those tapped for induction are Bill Malloy, Bob Barker, Angie Bruecker Martin, Debbie Styx and David Wright.

Malloy and Martin both were athletes and coaches in track and field at the university. Barker competed in basketball, Wright in football and Styx in softball.

Induction ceremonies will be Feb. 13, 2010, in the Ohio Building. They will be recognized at the Indiana State men's basketball game that afternoon in Hulman Center.

David Wright, 1992-1995 — The former football player recently was named to the Silver Anniversary honor team in the Missouri Valley Conference for football.

He earned second-team All-America honors in 1992 and was an all-conference selection in the Gateway Conference in 1992 and 1993 … holds school records for best average per rushing attempt (5.33 yards per rush), most all-purpose yards in a season (2,014 in 1992) and most average yards per play in a season (7.93 per play in 1992) … had two seasons of 1,000 yards or more (1,313 in 1992 and 1,262 in 1993) … ran for 225 yards against Western Illinois in 1992, ranking third in school history … ranks second in career rushing totals with 4,181 yards and second in all-purpose yards with 5,341.

Bill Malloy, coached track at ISU from 1967-1979 — competed in track at ISU and coached high school track before coaching at ISU … won 43 major championships as track and cross country coach at Terre Haute Wiley High School with the Red Streaks losing five dual meets in 13 seasons … was coach of the Wiley team that was host team for the first indoor prep track meet in Terre Haute against Indianapolis Shortridge in 1953 … coached Cheryl Pedlow, the first woman to receive an athletic scholarship at Indiana State and in the state of Indiana (1968) … coached two All-Americans and four NCAA Division I national qualifiers … coached Charlie Warthan, who finished 41st in the cross country championship meet, highest finish for any ISU athlete … coached a championship relay team in 1976 … led team to Indiana Collegiate Conference championships in 1967 and 1968.

Angie Bruecker Martin, competed in track from 1997-2001 — named to the MVC Centennial Team for middle distance in track … earned All-America honors in 2000 … set all-time MVC record in the indoor 800-meter event in 2000 … was conference champ in outdoor 400-meter race three times … was champion in indoor 800-meter race and was on championship 4x400 relay team in indoor conference meet … earned all-conference honors eight times in outdoor competition and four times in indoor meets … received Hillman Award given to outstanding senior athlete in 2001 … holds school record for 800 meters outdoors (2:06.05).

Bob Barker, competed in basketball from 1968-1971 — earned all-conference honors in Midwestern Conference in 1971 … ranks seventh in school rebounding average totals with 7.9 per game and is 18th in scoring with 1,199 points … led team in scoring in 1969-70 season with 445 points … appears three times in top-10 single-game rebound totals with 22 against Butler (1/07/70), 22 against Ball State (1/10/70), 20 against Western Illinois (1/12/70) … had career-high 35 points against Butler (2/07/70).

Debbie Styx, competed in softball from 1993-1997 — named to MVC Centennial Team for softball … earned co-MVP honors in the conference in 1992 … all-conference first-team pick in 1992 … ranks first all-time in triples in a season with eight in 1992 … ranks first in triples in career with 14 … ranks second in career shutouts with 23 and career strikeouts with 362 … ranks third in career complete games with 60 and career ERA with 1.53 mark … ranks third in single-season batting averages with .382 in 1992.
