Going for perfection

In what may be the last meeting ever between the two schools on the football field, the Sequoyah Indians are looking to give the Colcord Hornets a proper send-off tonight.

Due to the restructuring of Classes 2A and 3A, the Indians and Hornets will be in different classes for at least the next two seasons.

"They've always played us tough," Sequoyah head coach Brent Scott said. "It's a very difficult place to play."

This year's battle between the two teams will, as usual, be loaded with playoff implications. Due to the high number of district points, the Indians have accumulated already this season, they are virtually guaranteed first place in District 2A-8. The Indians will most likely host the Sperry Pirates in next week's first round playoff game.

For the Hornets, a win and a Vian loss will mean second place in the district and a matchup at home with the Pawhuska Huskies. A loss or a Vian win and the Hornets will have to go on the road next week, most likely to Verdigris to face the Cardinals. The Hornets have already lost to Verdigris once this season, a 20-0 decision in week three.

Since losing to Vian in week five, the 15th-ranked Hornets, led by quarterback/defensive back Canaan Sherrell, have won four in a row, including a 35-7 win over Adair two weeks ago and a 20-18 squeaker over Kansas last Friday.

Sherrell has thrown for over 1,000 yards on the season with 12 touchdowns and is also the team's leading rusher with 491 yards.

Defense has been the strength of the Hornets this season. Led by linebacker Jordan Cowan's 88 tackles, Colcord has given up the ninth fewest points in Class 2A, including just 32 during their four-game winning streak.

That defense will be going up against an Indian offense that has been unstoppable this season and seems to be getting better heading toward the playoffs. The Indians have scored at least 50 points in three of their last four games and lead Class 2A with an average of 51 points per game.

Last week, the Indians racked up over 400 yards on the ground, including 218 by senior running back Rykar Salazar, who went over 1000 yards for the season and now has 1,143 yards and 17 touchdowns.

The Indian defense has been equally tough, having held the Warriors to 51 total yards in the first half of last week's game. The Indians have given up an average of 12.5 points in each of their last four games.

The Indians and the Hornets will tee it up at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The game will be Senior Night for Colcord.

"They generally don't like us very much, which makes for a good football game," Scott said. "They're probably the best-coached team in the district. It's going to be a real battle for us."
