Bowling Green couple killed in Tennessee crash

BROWNSVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee Highway Patrol says four people are dead following a fiery crash in West Tennessee involving two tractor-trailers and at least two passenger cars.

Police told media outlets that two people — a husband and wife from Bowling Green, Kentucky — died in one of the tractor-trailers. They believe the other two killed were in one of the passenger cars. No identities were released.

The crash happened Wednesday afternoon near the 64 mile maker of Interstate 40 in Haywood County, which is between Jackson and Memphis.

It wasn't immediately clear how the crash happened. Police said it remains under investigation.

Haywood County resident Melissa Overton traveled by the accident scene after the westbound lanes were reopened and described it as "terrible."

"There was nothing left of either one of the trucks," Overton told The Jackson Sun. "You couldn't even tell it was a truck except we could see the steel of the trailer of both of the trucks. The tire was burned. The car (I saw) was unrecognizable."

She said she passed by a little after 5 p.m., and the vehicles were charred and still smoking.
