Cornelius Faulkner, the girls’ head basketball coach at Caverna High School, knew something had to change with his team if he wanted to contend for a regional title this year. The Lady Colonels won 12 games last season, but Faulkner said his team never came close to living up to its potential.
So, as soon as the season was over last year, Faulkner got his players back in the gym and straight into the weight room.
“This summer, I knew the first thing I had to do was to get the girls in the gym and get them physically stronger. We’ve got size, we just weren’t strong,” Faulkner said.
“We didn’t play as aggressive on both ends of the floor last year as I wanted to.
“And besides getting physically stronger, we’ve also gotten mentally stronger. This is the first year since I’ve been here the girls have come in ready to play basketball. We will be young, but they know they have a chance to be successful, to be special.”
The Lady Colonels will open the season on Monday, Nov. 26, at Fort Knox. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. CST.
