BOWLING GREEN —
As Jason Esters pulled his team together Friday night after the Barren County High School Trojans were beaten 47-8 by Greenwood High School, the No. 7 team in the state, Esters paused a minute.
Despite the score, the Trojans didn’t play that badly and Esters wanted his players to know that. They showed signs of brilliance running the ball, and quarterback Josh Durham’s arm looked good, when he was able to find open receivers. But the Gators scored 21 points in the fourth quarter to blow the game open and claim the hard-fought victory.
“For three quarters, we gave them everything we had,” Esters told his team. “For three quarters, we were right there. But think about how many penalties we had that negated big plays for us. You have to learn to play smart and play hard.”
The loss drops the Trojans to 1-6 on the year and 0-3 in district play. Greenwood improves to 6-1 on the season and 2-1 against district competition.
The Gators got on the scoreboard first Friday night, driving 48 yards on three plays to go up 6-0. Quarterback Josh Dyer found Dakota Madison behind the Trojan defense for a 44-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was no good.
