BARREN COUNTY SOFTBALL: Trojanettes win over Warren Central

GLASGOW — Cheyanne Cumberland’s big blow helped make it three in row for the Trojanettes. Barren County defeated an over-matched softball team from Warren Central Tuesday night on their home field. Cumberland’s third inning, a  three run homer led a 12 hit attack as the Trojanettes won 11-0 against the Lady Dragons.

“We’re trying to do some of the little things that you work on all year long and maybe some of them are starting to come together. Again it goes back to good pitching and catching and we had that again tonight. Kennedy Samson got her first Varsity win tonight as a sophomore. I am very proud of her.” said Trojanette coach Kevin Jackson. “Harley Asher, a freshman, caught tonight and caught a great game. You got a freshman – sophomore combo there. So that’s exciting. That’s where it all starts. We also are still getting those timely hits. We’re getting a couple of two out hits and scoring runs. It’s different people doing it and that’s what’s exciting. We are not a one person team. We’ve got several people who are contributing right now. We’ve had a little sickness and injury both. Kennedy Logsdon is out with a minor injury. We have a couple of kids sick. My shortstop, Abby Elmore, has strep throat. So we went with a different shortstop. A different pitcher, a different catcher and I feel comfortable now playing some of these kids because they are starting to show they belong out on the field too. They just need a chance. “Samson gave up just three hits in a five inning complete game. She struck out two, both in the fifth. She walked four. Her defense backed her up with two double plays.

Barren County scored three runs in the first. Both Hadleigh Hammer and Amber Jones scored after hitting singles. Shelby Wood also scored after driving a ball to centerfield to get on base. The Lady Dragon centerfielder misplayed the ball and Wood made it all the way to third. Natalie Staples then knocked her home with a single.

BCHS sent nine hitters to the plate in the second and scored four runs. Harley Asher led off the inning with a single. Molly Settle followed her with another single. Next, Hammer reached on an error before Staples reached on a fielder’s choice. All four scored. Amber Jones and Shelby Wood also had singles in the inning.

In the third, the Trojanettes scored three more. Settle hit a single to lead off the inning and was pinch ran for by Jordan Crist. Hammer then reached base for the third time with a single. Then came the big hit of the game when Cumberland hit a ball over the centerfield fence.

“Cheyanne Cumberland is on a tear right now. I told her, just like in the movie Bull Durham, you ride it as long as you can. She hit a home run last night. Her first varsity home run, at Monroe. She hit her second tonight back to back against Warren Central,” said Jackson.
