My fishing buddies in the Oldtimers group are big fans of the Kentucky Afield television show with Tim Farmer.
When we saw Tim last season catching big redears and bluegill with Kentucky-Barkley Lake guide Jim Doom, it immediately flung a craving on some of us.
I joined my friend Wilbur Carroll last week for an outing with Doom, this time on Lake Barkley. We had hoped to catch some of those 12- and 13-inch redears, known by many as shellcrackers.
It turned out to be a great day both weather and fishing wise, even though we had only limited success with the shellcrackers.
Doom knows both Kentucky and Barkley lakes like the back of his hand and he put us on some mighty good spots. He has a big comfortable flat bottom boat ideal for the kind of fishing we were doing and his rates are very reasonable. He also fishes for other species, including stripers.
Both Wilbur and I like to fish only a half day because neither of us can take the sun all day. At our age, a half day is better suited for us. Doom was happy to fill our request.
