Trojans defeat Bulldogs, 71-66

BOWLING GREEN — Sometimes, the best ideas come at the most unusual moments.

As Barren County coach Warren Cunningham was coming out of the tunnel for the second half of the Trojans’ 4th Region Basketball Tournament game against Clinton County Tuesday night, one of his assistants told him he should think about putting Clay Simmons on Clinton County’s Keifer Dalton in the second half. After all, Dalton had just posted 19 points on the Trojans in the first half of play to help the Bulldogs to a 37-30 advantage at the intermission.

Cunningham did just that and the move worked as Simmons held Dalton to only 10 points in the second half and the Trojans rallied for a 71-66 victory. Barren County will now face Warren Central on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the tournament semifinals at Diddle Arena on the Western Kentucky University campus.

“Keifer Dalton is special. And I think in the second half, we wanted to wear him down a little bit,” Cunningham explained. “We had talked about putting Clay on him and I thought he did a good job of wearing him down. I thought Dalton wasn’t as quick off the drive and when he did get decent looks, he didn’t make as many.

“Hey, I thought we fought our guts out. And I thought we had to. It took every ounce of energy we had from everybody to find a way to get it done tonight. I thought our guys showed a lot of poise not to panic when Clinton County got on top. I thought it was just a gutty performance by our guys.”
