Monroe County Lady Falcons fall to Allen County-Scottsville Lady Patriots

SCOTTSVILLE — The disappointment was written all over Dwayne Murray’s face after he watched his Monroe County Lady Falcons drop a big District 15 girls’ basketball game at Allen County-Scottsville Friday night.

Monroe County spotted the Lady Patriots almost a 20-point lead in the first half and the hole was just too big for the Lady Falcons to dig themselves out of in the second half. Monroe County rallied, but Allen County won, 54-50.

“We spotted them 17 points in the first half. We didn’t play with any intensity or fire. I don’t know if the kids understood the importance of this game,” said Coach Murray. “We didn’t come out and play fired up or intense at all. We talked all week about coming out and matching their intensity and their effort and we didn’t do it.”

The Lady Patriots jumped out on top early and led 12-6 midway through the first period and expanded their lead to 32-14 in the waning moments of the first half. Allen County’s Morgan Rich and Savannah Gregory led the ACS charge.

But a pretty stern halftime speech by Murray got the Lady Falcons going in the second half and Monroe County slowly chipped away at the Allen County lead.

“We laid down in the first half and didn’t play hard. We let them box us out and rebound. We missed shots, we missed layups, and you just can’t do that against a good team,” Coach Murray said. “We can’t spot a team 17 points in the first half and expect to fight back in the second half. That puts the team in jeopardy. It is hard to battle back.

“My hat is off to our girls for fighting back in the second half. I thought we tied it at one point, or we got within one point there in the third period, but we didn’t do anything with it.”

The Lady Falcons were in striking distance with 4:01 to go in the game. Monroe County had cut it to 47-44 and had some momentum. A bucket by Madison Clements pulled the Lady Falcons to within one at 47-46 with 2:37 on the clock.
