HORSE CAVE —
The Caverna Lady Colonels dream of winning another Region 5 All “A” Classic tournament is alive and well after defeating Bardstown's Bethlehem High School 62-45 in the first round of the Classic Monday night in Caverna's home gym.
The three prong scoring attack of Madison Faulkner, Ciara Waggoner and Reagan Kingrey was too much for the visiting Banshees in the end, but the final score doesn't fairly describe the battle the two teams waged.
The game started with both teams fighting for every rebound, battling on every possession, contesting every shot. The Lady Colonels went down 5 – 0 to start the game but by the end of the 1st quarter they had the lead 14–13, due in large part to Kingrey's 7 points that period.
The second quarter was more of the same as Bethlehem scored the first two baskets to capture the lead but Caverna again battled back behind Faulkner, who had 8 in the quarter. The halftime score had Caverna with 32 over Bethlehem's 26.
In the third period both teams tried to seize control.
“We tried to execute in the half court and work on some things,” Caverna interim coach Crystal Gardner said.
Only nine total field goals were scored in the quarter as both teams played at a slower, but still tenacious, pace. Again it was Faulkner and Kingrey who led Caverna with 8 and 4 in the quarter, respectively. Waggoner scored the only other field goal for Caverna in the third but their total of 12 points was enough to extend their lead to 44–37 before starting the final quarter.
The fourth quarter's pace was as fast as the third's was slow.
