Tucked away in the small town of Horse Cave, the Caverna High School Colonels are quietly making a name for themselves on the basketball court.
After going 28-80 over the last four years, the Colonels, under the direction of head coach Blake Button, have turned the basketball program around and finished the first half of the 2012-13 season with an 11-3 overall ledger.
The Colonels have created a stir among Caverna fans.
“We set some high expectations for ourselves at the beginning of the season,” Button said. “We set a goal of 20 wins for this year, so we needed to win early. Admittedly, we’re surprised with some of the wins this year.
“But I don’t know if I am surprised with the way we’ve been playing. I don’t know if surprised is the right word. I certainly knew this team was capable of having this much success, but I didn’t know this team would come together so quickly.”
Caverna opened the season with five straight victories, including wins over Fort Knox, Cumberland County and District 18 foes Hart County and Green County. After a loss to District 15 favorite Barren County, the Colonels came back with back-to-back wins to push their record to 7-1.
