Hornets sting Scottie in All 'A' sectional

GLASGOW —

The Hornets sting the Scotties on Glasgow's home field. Glasgow's dream of a Touchstone Energy All “A” Classic title came to an end when they lost to Hancock County 6-0 Saturday afternoon.

The Scotties sent Dalton Shoemake and his 4-1 record to the hill in hopes of advancing in the Classic. Shoemake pitched 4 1/3 innings giving up 5 hits and allowing only two earned runs. Jon Thomas Green relieved Shoemake in the fifth inning. Green gave up only one run and one hit. All numbers good enough to win, but the Scotties, uncharacteristically, couldn't put men on base and committed four errors.

I think our pitching was the plus of the game. Our pitchers gave our kids chances to make plays. There were some tough chances out there, but we gave our kids chances to make those plays. “ Said Glasgow's head coach Sam Royse. “We are disappointed for our youngsters. Hancock County played a great, beautiful ball game today and we didn't match it. They won the game and deserved to win the game.

The lefthander (The Hornet's Will Allard) pitched a masterful game. He kept balls down. He didn't walk many – maybe one or two kids. They made plays defensively. They made routine plays. They made some tough plays. They went right, they went left on balls hit well. They just did what you have to do to win.”

The Hornets jumped on the Scotties early. Colton White and Kolton Keown, the second and third batters in the first inning, both reached on singles. White scored on Keowns hit when the ball got by Glasgow's outfielders and rolled almost to the fence. Keown scored on a single by Logan Cheek two batters later giving the Hornets a 2-0 lead after one half inning.

We made mistakes. That's how runs are usually scored. Rarely will you see a team go up there and go base hit, base hit, base hit, base hit and score two or three runs in an inning,” Royse said. “Usually somewhere there is a walk or an error or something that aides a team.”
