COMMENTARY: KHSAA reveals football reclass

GLASGOW — The football reclassification plan, which requires final approval, was revealed by the Kentucky High School Athletics Association this week.

The plan as presented would be a significant shake up for some area schools and statewide.

Barren County, which remains a 5A football school, would play in a four-team district beginning with the 2015 season. That would be the senior season for the present sophomore class.

Since 2007 — the first season after the KHSAA expanded football from four classifications to six — Barren has been locked in a district with Bowling Green and Warren Central. During the seven seasons since then, Bowling Green has won three state titles and played four for. The Purples only loss in the championship game was in 2007 against Fort Thomas Highlands. Warren Central has often been the second best team in this area of the state during those seven seasons.

The Dragons will drop to Class 4A in the 2015 setup. They would join a district that includes Allen County-Scottsville, Franklin-Simpson, South Warren and Warren East.

Meanwhile, Barren’s district would still have Bowling Green and Greenwood left over and Grayson County would return to the district. The Cougars had been in the district from 2007 to 2011. Barren’s district would be one of three in Class 5A with four teams in it. Unless there is a change, four teams from each district will make the playoffs.

Of statewide interest in 5A, Highlands, Covington Catholic and Pulaski County will also be in the class. John Hardin moved down to 4A.

Glasgow’s district would return with some historic rivals in Monroe County — moving back to Class 2A from 3A — Metcalfe County, Green County and Clinton County.

From 2007 to 2013, the regional champion has come from that district four times.

Mayfield, a constant threat to win a state title, will move up to Class 2A from 1A. The Cardinals played in five consecutive state finals and won three titles from 2009-13.
