LEXINGTON — Several area basketball players have been invited to compete for spots on the Kentucky All Star teams.
Shalika Smith, Glasgow's senior center and Western Kentucky University signee, is one of the 40 girls invited to try out for the girls' senior team.
That team will play Indiana's all stars on consecutive days in June. The first game will be at Transylvania University in Lexington on June 13. The following day the teams will play at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Dates for junior games have not been set.
Monroe County's Dillon Geralds has been invited to try out for the boys' junior team. Allen County's Morgan Rich, who is recovering from a knee injury, has been invited to try out for the girls' junior team.
The tryouts are this weekend at Georgetown College. The junior boys will begin at 10:30 a.m. EST Saturday with the girls at 12:30 p.m. Senior tryouts will begin at 10:30 a.m. EST Sunday with the girls to follow at 12:30 p.m. The events are open to the public and cost $5.
There are also several players local basketball fans may have seen this season who will be in Georgetown trying to make a team.
Byron Carver and Chris Porter-Bunton, Warren Central seniors, will be trying to make the boys' team.
LaRue County's Ivy Brown, a WKU signee and Kentucky's Miss Basketball, has already made the senior girls team. Madison Rich of Edmonson County will be trying out for the senior girls' team.
Several players that the Glasgow Lady Scotties competed against during their historic season will also be in Georgetown: Lafayette's Sarah Cooley, Danville's Essence Gray and Laken Gray, Newport Central Catholic's Nicole Kiernan, Sacred Heart's Raven Merriweather and Daija Ruffin, Owensboro Catholic's Kaylynn Pearson, and Somerset's Virginia Scott have all been invited to try out for the girls' senior team. Dee Givens and Ashanti Thomas of Lafayette, Le'Onzerrea Grubbs and Denayia Holmes of University Christian, and Alexus Mayes and Michaela Ware of Newport Central Catholic are invited to the junior girls' team tryout.
Keifer Dalton of Clinton County has been invited to try out for the junior boys team, along with Jared Savage of Warren Central and Tucker Sine of Bowling Green.
