Regional woes

Barren County softball teams lose openers

GLASGOW — Three Barren County teams opened play Thursday in the Babe Ruth Regional Softball Tournament in Shelbyville, Ind. The Trojanettes struggled early as the Barren County 16-Under and 14-Under teams came out of the gates with losses.

Information on the Barren County 12-Under Team was not available.

The Barren County 16s battled Liberty and dropped a 7-2 decision.

“I think we came out a bit nervous and uptight,” said Barren County coach Hailey Vernon. “Today, I think we played to the level of our competition.”

Barren County scored both of its runs in the third inning.

Emily Baker-King had an RBI single to score Emily Foster. Baker-King later scored on a hard-hit single by Cheyenne Cumberland.

“We made a lot of errors in this game,” Vernon relayed. “We didn’t do the fundamentals.”

Baker-King got the start on the mound for Barren County and did a good job, Vernon said, despite the final score.

“Today wasn’t Emily’s best game,” Vernon said. “But they didn’t really hit her that much. Now we have to learn from our mistakes.”

The Barren County 16s earned a forfeit in the second round of pool play and are now scheduled to open play in the regular double-elimination tournament late Friday afternoon.

In the 14-Under game, Barren County lost 7-1 to New Washington.

Barren County’s only run of the game came on Breanna Wooten’s RBI single to score Andrea Brown.

“I was actually very pleased with the way the girls played today,” said Barren County coach Gala Clay.

“Our defense was there, we just struggled with our bats.”

Clay said the Barren County Trojanettes hit the ball well, they just couldn’t put enough hits together to score a lot of runs. “We left a lot of runners on base,” she said.

The Barren County 14s will be back in pool play action on Friday at 9 a.m. when they play Madison Grant.

They will also play at 4 p.m. on Friday before opening play in the regular tournament on Saturday.
