Monroe County wins 3A regional championship

TOMPKINSVILLE — The Monroe County Falcons have won three regional titles in five years. Friday, though, they captured their first Class 3A region championship with a win over South Warren High School.

“Our defense played phenomenal tonight. I can’t say enough about my coaching staff and my players,” Falcons head coach John Petett said. “(Chad Wilson) is just a warrior, (Jacob) Hodges is a warrior, this whole team is full of warriors.”

The Falcons’ defense killed several Spartan drives Friday night that proved critical to their team’s victory. Those stops allowed the offense to seal the victory.

The first key defensive stand for Monroe came early in the second quarter. The Spartans had put together a drive that spanned more than seven minutes and pushed inside the Falcons’ 10-yard line. On third-and-goal from the 9, South Warren’s quarterback was sacked for a three-yard loss and his squad was forced to attempt a 30-yard field goal. Andrew Upton made the kick to put his team ahead 3-0 with 9:29 left in the first half.

Petett said stopping the Spartans on that drive was huge. “We knew they had a good field goal kicker and would probably kick a 3, but I told the team if we gave them a 3 there, then everything else would be fine.”
