Scotties end season on high swing

GLASGOW — Glasgow’s 2014 tennis season concluded Monday at the Fourth Region Tournament in Bowling Green.

“The Scottie boys did very well, ending the first day of competition tied for third in team standings,” said head coach Joe Downing. “Three of the four entries advanced to the second round as Foster Vann won in singles and the doubles teams of Ashab Ahmed and Cody Jones and Trent Bosse and Adam Garrett also won.”

In the second round, both doubles teams lost extremely close matches.

Ahmed and Jones lost to Bowling Green in a third-set tiebreaker 9-11 and Bosse and Garrett lost to Barren County 8-10 in a third-set tiebreaker.

“Foster Vann played his best match of the season against Monroe County’s Jamison McFall in straight sets to advance to the quarterfinals in this his first year of play as a Scottie,” Downing said. “He lost Monday’s quarterfinal match against Greenwood’s Austin Schneller 5-7, 2-6, but played very well.”

The season has been very successful and a lot of fun as the Scottie boys ended the season at 9-9 in what was a rebuilding year.

“I have been really pleased with our progress throughout the season. The regional showing demonstrates how close we are to being among the best,” Downing said. “Who would have believed at the beginning of this season that we would end up in the top 5 or 6 teams in the region at the end of the season. All we have to do is believe it is possible and then be willing to work toward it.

“Practice makes better. I’ve never seen the perfect player or perfect match. We have everyone returning for next year. I am excited to see who decides to work during the summer, fall, and winter to improve their game,” the coach said. “No matter what, we have a great group of young men and a fantastic group of supportive parents. We are having fun.”
