Lady Falcons capture title

GLASGOW — Lauren Turner and the Monroe County Lady Falcons met Morgan Rich and the Allen County-Scottsville Lady Patriots in a battle for the 15th District Volleyball Tournament championship Tuesday night in Glasgow.

The Lady Falcons prevailed in four games 25-16, 25-17,17-25 and 25-17, but the scores did not represent the ferocity of the battle.

“Our team and Monroe are pretty equal teams,” said Lady Patriot coach Julie Spurlock. “... It was (Lauren) Turner who was all over the court. She turned into a one-man team when they needed it. Lauren’s a great player. She always has been.”

In the first game with Monroe leading by just one point, 6-5, it was Mckinnley Turner who scored seven straight points with her serve for the Lady Falcons. While Lauren Turner used her play at the net to keep  the Lady Patriots from getting any closer than six the rest of the game.

In the second game, it was Lauren Turner who again dominated net play. Then with the game still in doubt at 20-17, Monroe’s Lakota Ethridge served for five straight points to put the game away.

In the third game, the Lady Patriots were facing elimination and they played like it. They jumped to a 9-3 lead, but the Lady Falcons fought back to draw within one with Allen County leading 14-13. With ACS losing momentum and their backs against the wall, the Lady Patriot’s Rich lead them on a 11-4 run to win the game.

The fourth game was the same as the first three with Lauren Turner and Rich trading spikes and, like the first two, it was the Lady Falcons who prevailed.

“Allen County is a great hitting team. They can also pick up about anything you give them,” said Monroe head coach Katelin Myatt. “I was very proud of the way we moved. We were quick, we covered better tonight and it showed. Lauren Turner did a very good job. She covered, she put the ball where we needed it.

“Mckinnley Turner did a very good job of hitting between the blocks. She’s got a great tip that she uses and can pull it out at anytime.”

“Morgan Rich is an unreal athlete and she is a positive force for our team. She’s a leader that inspires her team mates.” said Spurlock. “I don’t feel my girls played bad at any point. Congratulations to Monroe on the win.”

“I am thankful for the opportunity to be here and thankful for the win. Both teams did a great job. Now I am looking forward to region,” Myatt said.

The Region 4 Volleyball Tournament will be played next week. Brackets will be drawn once all regional district tournaments have been played.
