ALBANY — Glasgow coach Justin Stinson had a quick response to the question, “What was the difference in tonight's game?” “Madison Clements,” he said.
Clements scored 34 of her team's 57 points in Monroe County's 57-49 win over the Lady Scotties in the championship game of the Fourth Region All “A” Classic Tournament on Saturday at Clinton County High School.
It was the fourth consecutive meeting in the tournament title game for Monroe and Glasgow, and the Lady Falcons have won the last three.
“I'm glad she save up for tonight,” Lady Falcons coach Dwayne Murray said as his players climbed a ladder to cut down the nets after the game.
Murray pointed out Clements struggled to score in two previous meetings with Glasgow. “We wanted to get her involved in the offense and the other girls did a good job of being patient on offense.
“We have a tight-knit group. They don't care who scores, just as long as we win.”
Clements' big night began three minutes into the game when she scored her first field goal that gave her team a brief 6-5 lead.
The game consisted of 18 lead changes through the first two quarters as a basket from one team was answered with one by the other team.
A 3-pointer by Clements with six seconds to play in the first half gave Monroe a 30-28 lead at the break. It also turned out to be the last time Monroe trailed in the game.
A jumper by Clements 44 seconds into the second half pushed her team's advantage to 32-28.
Shalika Smith responded with a pair of field goals, the second coming after an offensive rebound, and tied the game at 32-32 with 5:56 showing in the third quarter.
Clements responded with a pair of field goals, the first coming 28 seconds after Smith tied the game. The Lady Falcons would not relinquish the lead again.
