Clinton holds off Glasgow in All 'A' regional final

ALBANY — Glasgow had chances Saturday night to capture the Fourth Region All “A” Classic championship, but couldn't make the plays when necessary.

“Defensively, we were outstanding,” Scotties head coach John Tinsley said. “We missed some shots around the hole, missed some open shots.”

The end result was a 45-41 loss to Clinton County in Albany that lifted the Bulldogs to the Touchstone Energy All “A” Classic State Tournament in Frankfort. They play Knott County Central at 7 p.m. central Thursday at the convention center.

With four minutes to play Saturday, the outcome of the championship game was still in question. Milas Norris had just stolen the basketball, made a pass to Steely Harris to ignite a fast break, and then gotten the ball back for a layup with 4:07 to go. The basket tied the contest at 39-all.

Clinton County's ensuing possession ended with a turnover, giving the Scotties a chance to take a lead with less than three minutes in the game.

Glasgow, though, gave the ball right back and with 2:02 showing on the game clock, Frank England made a field goal for the Bulldogs and his team took the lead for good, up 41-39.

The Scotties' next possession also ended with a turnover and Clinton's Kolby Langford scored on a layup with 30 seconds left in the game, ending any question as to the outcome.

“We had a couple of turnovers down the stretch and that hurt us,” Tinsley said.

Glasgow had a look at a 3-pointer that was short with 16 seconds to play. Also, after a missed free throw on a one-and-one by England, Ryne Tinsley scored with eight seconds left in the game. The Scotties, though, were forced to foul and Langford hit both free throws with 4.4 seconds showing to set the final score.

The game was close throughout despite Clinton County holding a lead most of the game. There were only three lead changes, but the contest was tied six times.
