Metcalfe girls want another trip to region

GLASGOW — Pete DiStefano, the veteran girls’ basketball coach at Metcalfe County High School, has developed his basketball team into a district and regional contender on a pretty much annual basis.

The Lady Hornets have made the trip to the regional tournament in each of the last two years and as Metcalfe County begins preparation for next week’s 16th District Tournament, he would like nothing better than to make it to Diddle Arena, site of this year’s regional tournament, for a third consecutive season.

But there is an obstacle in front of the Lady Hornets’ as they begin their postseason journey. Metcalfe County opens the district tournament Tuesday night against the pesky Clinton County Lady Bulldogs. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.

“It seems like every year at this time of the year we play a lot of the better teams in the area, like Russell County, Glasgow or Monroe County. And I think that helps us,” DiStefano explained. “I have been pretty pleased with the way we played lately and I think we’re in a good frame of mind.

“We’ve hit a tough stretch here late in the season, But I think the kids have the maturity they need to put things behind them. You have to move on. And besides, it is all for real on Tuesday night.

“Clinton County is a very good team. Down the stretch, they’ve played very well. They’ve beaten some good teams, and I think they’ve done a good job of righting the ship over there.”
