Trojans top Purples; BCHS netters split with Metcalfe County

GLASGOW — The Barren County Trojans opened their 2014 baseball season Thursday with a hard-fought 7-6 victory over Bowling Green. The Trojans scored seven runs in the first two innings and then fought off a late charge by the Purples to secure the victory.

Britt Crabtree highlighted the Trojans’ first inning with a two-run single to score Cole Scott and Clay Groce. Barrett Billingsley scored Barren County’s other run on a passed ball.

The Trojans took a 7-0 lead with four tallies in the second inning. After Cole Payne scored on an error, Andy Highbaugh set the pace for BCHS with a 2-run single to bring in Ellis Wininger and Billingsley. Highbaugh later came around to score on a wild pitch.

Payne got the win for the Trojans. He went three innings and gave up no runs. He walked two and struck out one. Grayson Hyatt went two innings and give up two runs. Andrew Bays threw two-thirds of an inning before Highbaugh pitched the last 1-1/3 to earn the save.

The Trojans will visit Nelson County on Friday.

BCHS netters split two

The Barren County Trojans and Trojanettes split tennis matches with Metcalfe County on Thursday.

BCHS won the boys’ match 3-2, but lost the girls’ match 5-0.

The Trojans won two of the three singles matches, getting wins from Tristan Shaw and Jacob Belcher. Metcalfe County’s lone win in singles was from Jackson Bell at the No. 1 position.

The Trojans also took two of the three doubles matches.

Hayden Rickard and Ethan Kiteck won their match at No. 1, while Nathan Tetzlaff and Jeremiah Russell teamed up for a win at No. 3.

Metcalfe County’s Konnor Gallagher and Lauren Coffey gave MCHS a 2-0 lead after the girls’ singles play. Gallagher beat Brie Simmons, while Coffey knocked off Trojanette Mallie Wells.

Molly Matney and Lindsey Compton kept the roll going for Metcalfe in doubles. They picked up a victory at No. 1, while Coffey and Gallagher got the win at No. 2. Metcalfe County’s Cheyenne Hurt and Kenzie Edwards won a 8-0 victory at the No. 3 doubles position.
