District battle

BCHS splits district contest with Monroe County

GLASGOW — The Barren County High School Trojans and Trojanettes split a district golf match at Monroe County on Monday.

The Trojans beat the Falcons by a score of 160-171, while the Trojanettes lost to the Lady Falcons, 178-183.

Nathan Layton fired a 37 to lead the Trojans to victory. He was supported by teammates Matt Turner, Mark Shipley and Andy Highbaugh, who each shot 41.

Monroe County individual scores were not available.

“You are always happy when you win, but are you as happy when you win, but you don’t play well, probably not,” said Barren County boys’ coach Robert Bauer.

“I told the guys this match meant a lot because we were playing on the course that we’re going to play the regional tournament on later this year.”

Bauer said the course is pretty challenging and that his players never seem to play it well.

But now he must prepare his team for Wednesday’s district tournament at Barren River State Park. Tee time is 4 p.m.

“We have a lot of talented guys, we just have to find a way for that talent to show up on the scorecard,” explained Bauer. “The district tournament is being played on our home course, but I think that is an overated advantage. I just want us to come out Wednesday and post a good score.”

“It is still early in the season, but we aren’t putting well,” said Barren County girls’ coach Jill Kinslow.

“We don’t really have a lot of time to practice on our putting, so it is going to have to be something the girls do on their own.”

Kylie Withrow led the Trojanettes in scoring with a 41. Jill Lawrence chipped in with a 43.

Amber Jewell posted a 45, while Lyn-Dawsyn Steenbergen wrapped up the scoring with a 54.

Now Kinslow must gear her team up for the district tournament on Wednesday.

“I think the girls will respond and come back ready to go on Wednesday,” said Kinslow. “Allen County is really playing well and Glasgow is always good. But if we come out and play like we’re capable, we can do it.”
