Cecilia — A big inning proved to be the difference for the Glasgow Little League 10-under All Stars.
Clinging to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning Wednesday in Cecilia against Russell County, Glasgow scored eight runs and sealed their shot at reaching the Little League State Tournament next week in Prestonsburg with a 10-2 victory.
"I expected a little closer game," said Glasgow coach Jeff Jessie. "Our pitching was good and we had the one big inning. If we win Friday, we go to state."
Russell County struck first with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Glasgow responded in the top of the second inning when Jacob Shaw reached base by drawing a walk. He advanced to third on a pass ball and a wild pitch before eventually scoring.
The all stars took the lead with the eight-run third inning and their pitchers and defense sealed the deal in the final game of the championship bracket. Glasgow needs only one win to reach the state tournament in only the second year of the organizations existence. They are scheduled to play next at 5 p.m. central Friday in the Little League District Tournament.
In the third inning, Tyler Lane led off with a single, Jackson Poland had a single, Jaden Fields nailed a single, Owen Riddle drilled a single and Logan Coomer offered up a single. Cole Bunch pounded a double that drove in two of the runs in the inning.
Glasgow's final run of the game came in the top of the sixth inning after Carson Jessie reached base on an error.
Lane, Bunch, Riddle and Shaw combined on the mound for Glasgow.
For the game at the plate, Peyton Dial had a pair of doubles.
