The Oldtimers are back from Kentucky Lake this week after trying the famous Kentucky-Barkley Lake spring crappie run.
Their opinion is that they were about a week or two early. They battled high winds and rough water most of the week, but did manage to catch some nice crappie. They tried a variety of methods, from spider rigging to dipping minnows.
The good crappie I saw in photos came by fishing jigs in stake beds in six to eight feet of water.
Meanwhile crappie here on Barren River Lake continue to improve with the better weather conditions.
I have seen some nice strings, including one with the blackest crappie I have ever seen. It was almost totally black.
Crappie are being caught here with several methods, but jigs fished in cover along the channels seem to be producing the best fish.
