Faulkner gets 36 in Caverna win

GLASGOW — It wasn’t a pretty win, but Cornelius Faulkner will take it.

Faulkner’s Caverna High School Lady Colonels struggled on both ends of the basketball floor Monday night before rallying to knock off Warren East, 71-62.

“It wasn’t very pretty, but it is a win,” said Faulkner. “I am not sure why we didn’t play very well. I didn’t think we played very well on defense at all. It was just a sloppy game.”

Caverna started the game out slow, falling behind early in the first period. However, the Lady Colonels rallied to take an 11-8 lead as the quarter came to a close. Warren East came back to outscore Caverna 13-8 in the second period to take a 21-19 advantage into the locker room.

“After the half, I got on them pretty hard,” said Faulkner. “I challenged Madison (Faulkner) and C.C. (Ciara Waggoner) and Kiki (Kiara Kirk). I guess the point was made because we scored 52 points in the second half.”

Caverna retook the lead in the third period by outscoring Warren East 26-20 to lead 45-41 as the fourth quarter began. The Lady Colonels put the game away in the final eight minutes, widening their advantage to the final nine-point margin.

Madison Faulkner led the Caverna charge with 36 points. She hit 10 of 25 shots from the field, including eight 3-pointers. Waggoner added 12 points and Shanda Bradley scored 11. Nicole Bradley, Kirk and Staysha Edwards added three points each. Giuliana Petrucci tallied two points and McKeeya Faulkner scored one point.

Caverna will visit John Hardin on Tuesday before hosting Glasgow on Friday.
