Trojanettes knock off Hart County

GLASGOW — The Barren County High School Trojanettes went into Friday’s basketball game with Hart County sporting a 5-12 season slate. Those numbers are not typical for the Trojanettes has they head into February, but coach John Butler says those numbers could be a little deceiving.

Barren County is playing a lot better than the record shows, he said, and the Trojanettes proved their coach is correct Friday with a 70-55 victory over Hart County.

“I have said all along that we’ve played better than our record shows. I think our ball-handling has really improved,” Butler said. “Now, we’ve played a brutal schedule, that’s part of it. And we’ve had trouble making shots. But just in the last week or so, we’ve started to make some shots, and that makes everything else better. It just makes your kids feel better.

“It is good to see a little success because we have been playing better. But our play is masked behind getting blown out, and a lot of that has to do with some of our injuries and our competition.”

The Trojanettes jumped on top of Hart County early and never looked back. Barren County led 21-14 at the end of the first period and 36-29 at the intermission.

After spotting a Hart County bucket from Hannah Bruton to start the third period, Barren County got a bucket from Taylor Davis and a free throw from Rachael Field to make it 39-31 with 6:26 to go in the period.

The lead stayed at eight points through most of the third quarter with Barren County leading 46-38 with 3:26 on the clock. The Trojanettes scored the next seven points in the game on 3-pointers from Emily Blair and Deanie Pedigo, and a free throw from Reanna Poynter to make it 53-38.

Barren County continued to pull away in the final eight minutes. A 3-pointer from Fields made it 60-43 and when Kennedy Logsdon scored on a jumper with 4:49 to go in the game, the Trojanettes held a comfortable 65-44 lead.

“Deanie (Pedigo) and Reanna (Poynter) are playing well. They both hand double-doubles on Tuesday so this is back-to-back double-doubles for them,” Butler relayed. “It was about this time last year, right around February, when Renanna started getting playing well for us. And Deaanie was just fantastic.

‘But I also thought our starting guards were fantastic. Kenn edy Logsdon was great. She had nine points and five assists. And I thought Taylor Davis played well, too. All of those girls, along with Rachael Fields playing well, our balance has been a lot better this week.”

Pedigo led the Trojanettes with 23 points and 12 rebounds. Poynter had 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Fields chipped in with 10 points and pulled down eight boards. Logsdon added nine points and Davis had eight. Blair scored six.
