Sophomore Haley Perkins netted a game-high 27 points to help lead Union College to the 89-81 Appalachian Athletic Conference victory over visiting Virginia Intermont on Monday.
The Glasgow native hit 8-of-15 shots from the floor and was a perfect 8-for-8 from the foul line in collecting the 27 points. Senior Amber Taylor turned in her third double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 assists.
The win ups the Bulldogs record to 16-7 overall and 12-3 in league play, while the Lady Cobras fall to 8-13 overall and 4-10 in league play.
Early on, it appeared the Bulldogs were going to run away with things, but the Lady Cobras battled back and gave Union fits the rest of the night. Union opened the game on fire, jumping out to an 18-5 lead with 16:13 to go in the half. Alyson Roberts accounted for half of Union’s points with three 3-pointers.
However, Virginia Intermont countered with a 16-2 surge and took a 21-20 lead after a Jordan Bacon bucket with 8:38 on the clock.
Union regrouped and quickly reclaimed the lead en route to a 40-32 halftime advantage.
Virginia Intermont continually fought and came close to taking the lead. After being down 10, the Lady Cobras chipped away at the deficit and finally cut it to 59-58 after an old-fashioned, three-point play from Courtney McKenzie with 7:51 to play. Union looked as if it would put Virginia Intermont away for good, using a 20-7 stretch in building a 79-65 cushion with 4:00 left.
