Glasgow all-stars advance in district tournament

GLASGOW — The Glasgow 10-Under and 12-Under All-Stars advanced in the Little League District Tournament in Springfield on Monday with big victories.

The 10U all-stars beat Marion County 12-3 to earn a berth in Thursday’s championship game, while the 12U squad, on the brink of elimination, came up big with a 14-3 victory over Russell County.

“It really wasn’t one of our best games. We seemed to come out a little flat today,” said Glasgow 10U coach Jeff Jessie. “It took us a couple of innings, but we finally got going.”

With the score tied at 3-3 heading into the fourth inning, Glasgow exploded for five runs in the fourth and four in the fifth to secure the win.

Zach Poore, Peyton Dial, Taye Poynter, Carson Jessie, Mason Bragg and Ashton Cerwinske were just some of the Scotties making an impact at the plate.

Glasgow will play either Russell County or Marion County at 6 p.m. Thursday.

“We’re hitting the ball well and scoring a lot of runs in this tournament,” Jessie said. “Hopefully, we can do that again on Thursday,”

“The kids were very focused tonight,” said Glasgow 12U coach Ervin Sorrell. “We practically gave Russell County a run in the first inning. We tied it, but then we didn’t score in the second and I think that’s when the kids buckled down.”

Russell County took a narrow lead heading into the fourth inning only to watch Glasgow push across nine big runs.

“We had some big hits in the fourth inning when we scored nine big runs,” Sorrell said. “Nik Sorrell came up with the bases load and, actually hit a triple, but it turned into an inside-the-park homer.

“Owen Riddle, who had been in a slump at the plate, came up with a big hit when he cleared the bases with a single.”

The Glasgow 12U all-stars will play Marion County on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Jacob Shaw got the win on the mound for Glasgow, while Connor Taylor had a walk-off two-run homer in the sixth inning.
